Topics: Current Political Challenges in the DRC

Topics and Guests: Today we will focus on the political challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  Last week people in the DRC demonstrated against any prolonged rule of President Joseph Kabila beyond his mandate expiring in December.  Various reports from the DRC indicate as high as 30 to 100 people have been killed in clashes between security forces and demonstrators last week.  Opposition groups have stated that they will continue the demonstrations.    Joining Africa Now! from South Africa to dissect the situation in the DRC is Congolese activist Mr. Kambale Musavuli and in the studio is Mr. Maurice Carney.  Both are with Friends of the Congo.

Mr. Maurice Carney is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Friends of the Congo.  He has worked with Congolese for over fifteen years in their struggle for peace, justice and human dignity. Mr. Carney appears regularly providing analysis on the Congo on various media outlets such as Al Jazeera, ABC News, Democracy Now, Real News Network, Pambazuka News, All Africa News, and more.  He has worked with civic associations in West Africa providing training on research methodology and survey.  He served as the interim Africa working group coordinator for Reverend Jesse Jackson while he was Special Envoy to Africa.  Mr. Carney has worked as a research analyst for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and as a research consultant for the Congressional Black Caucus.  Mr. Kambale Musavuli, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo and one of the leading political and cultural Congolese voices, is a human rights advocate, Student Coordinator and National Spokesperson for the Friends of the Congo.  He has written for The Washington Post, Foreign Policy in Focus, The Huffington Post and numerous other academic and news publications.  He has been interviewed on National Public Radio, Democracy Now, ABC News, Al Jazeera English Television, Radio France International and a myriad of radio and television programs. He has been featured in documentaries such as Iara Lee’s Cultures of Resistance, Martin Scorsese’s Surviving Progress, and the film Crisis in the Congo: Uncovering the Truth.
