Africa Now! August 5, 2015
Topics and Guests: Update on the Continued Political Crisis in Burundi; and Acclaimed Poet and Author Lemn Sissay and Renowned Filmmaker Haile Gerima on Identity and Creativity. Africa Now! begins with an update of the continued political crisis in Burundi which commenced in late April following the April 25 announcement that two-term President Nkurunziza would seek a third term which segments of the population say violates the constitution. But on May 5, Burundi’s constitutional court approved the incumbent to participate in the election process. On July 21 President Pierre Nkurunziza was re-elected with 69% of vote, in an election environment which the UN Electoral Observation Mission in Burundi (MENUB) said was “‘not conducive’ for an inclusive, free and credible electoral process.” (Source: Ban greatly concerned over ongoing deterioration of security in post-election Burundi, UN News, August 3, 2015) This week Burundi has witnessed violence against leading figures on the government side, and civil society. On Sunday August 2 top military general Adolphe Nshimirimana was killed in an a ambush; and the following day on August 3 Pierre Claver Mbonimpa President of the Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Detainees (A.P.R.O.D.H.) was shot and wounded. Joining Africa Now! to discuss the political crisis in Burundi is Mr. John Manirakiza. Mr. John Manirakiza, Member of Burundian Diaspora & Independent International Development Consultant.
The next topic is an exploration of identity and creativity with renowned filmmaker Haile Gerima and acclaimed poet and author and Chancellor of Manchester University in England, Lemn Sissay. Last month at Sankofa Video, Books and Cafe the artists reflected on their distinct creative journeys, and the centrality of identity in storytelling and exploring truths. The event was moderated by Heran Sereke-Brhan. Today Africa Now! plays a segment of that conversation.
